May 5, 2010

Hey, everyone!!! Only 19 days of school after Wednesday! Is that hard to believe, or what???

General Announcements: Seventh grade English students will be going to see Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Will Geer Theatre in Topanga on May 27th. Permission slips were sent home with students today during advisory, and they must be returned by May 13th. This should be a GREAT field trip!!!

Just so you know…All work is due for the 4th quarter on Friday, May 28, 2010.

English: Homework for Thursday/Friday is the first May paragraphs. The topic selections were handed out today. Please remind your student that they need to write TWO paragraphs.

We are beginning to read Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, so we are ready for our field trip at the end of the month. The students will gain understanding of the play by reading the play in contemporary language, comparing it to the original text, reading the “cartoon” version, and watching some clips from the movie.

In addition, we are going to be hearing from folks about their careers. For those parents who have agreed to speak to our students, I will be contacting you soon to set up a time. Thanks!

A PLEA: For families of 7th grade students…next year I will be setting up a program for weekly built in rewards for behavior and achievement. I am looking for $5 gift certificates for various places to give. (Starbucks, bookstores, Juice It Up, Wal Mart, Albertson’s, and so on) Thanks…

Have a great couple of days–blog more later!!!

Hello! Tomorrow night is Open House. Between 6:30 and 8:00, you can come and look around campus to see what your student has been up to. The Book Fair has also been kicked off, so if you are in the area of the library stop and take a look! If you feel like donating a book to our classroom, ask to see my book basket! Thanks…

English: STAR testing packet p. 43-48. (SO, students should have the packet completed from pages 7 through 48. We are also going to the library tomorrow, so if they want to buy a book have them bring some money!

Thanks.

April 16, 2010

Hello!

Announcements: Minimum Days next week Thursday and Friday! STAR testing is the following week–April 27, 28, and 29th. Those are also minimum days. In the past, parents have provided food and water for students during the testing. I will be sending out an email and a hard copy if you are interested in bringing something.

OPEN HOUSE IS ON THURSDAY APRIL 22–come see your student’s classrooms and buy some books at the BOOK FAIR.

English: HW: STAR packet p. 21-17 (Please check this packet with your student to see if it is complete. I will be checking it at the end of next week.) The second paragraph for April is due 4/22 (A block) and 4/23 (B block). REMEMBER this is now TWO paragraphs…turning in one paragraph is an automatic fail.

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES (once all other work is turned in, I will credit you with the extra points!): COC Career Expo tomorrow from 9 a.m to 1 p.m.; UCLA Festival of Books the weekend of April 24 and 25; if a parent/other person talks to our class about their career; or taking an Accelerated Reader test on a book that your student has read.

Thank you.

April 12, 2010

Welcome back!!! I hope spring break was relaxing. It is hard to believe that we only have 37 days left until summer break. That only gives me 18 more English days!

DODGER GAME: Tickets are still available, but you need to turn in your permission slip and your money by Wednesday, April 14th!

Announcements: Open House is April 22, 2010. If you are on campus, swing by and see what your student is up to in English. That Thursday and Friday are both minimum days. That week the library will be sponsoring a Book Fair. During English class, your student will be visiting the Fair to make purchases. If you are so inclined, I will be putting out my own “Wish List” for our classroom that you can find in the library!

English: STAR testing practice, Careers, and Shakespeare will fill our last 18 class periods together! You will (hopefull!) see a STAR testing packet come home with your student for the next two weeks. These are released questions from previous STAR tests, and we will be practicing them in class and as homework. You should be receiving a form inviting you to talk about your job with our students. Please fill that out, so we can schedule our speakers! “Midsummer Night’s Dream” is the play we will be studying for the remainder of May. I have purchased parallel text of the play, so we can read it the way Shakespeare wrote it AND the way we can understand it. The 7th graders from Team Columbia will be attending a production of the play at the Will Geer Theater on May 27, 2010.

Homework: STAR packet through page 13!. The weekly paragraph (which is now TWO paragraphs) will be due on April 16 (A block) and April 19 (B block). Each student needs to bring a picture by Friday for a project we will be doing about sentence writing. There will also be a quiz on Chapters 17-20 on Friday on Among the Hidden.
